Why 2026 Feels Like the Summer of Recalls (and Why Nobody Told You About Most of Them)

At a glance
- On September 11, the CDC closed the largest Cyclospora outbreak ever recorded in the United States: 12,883 illnesses in 21 states.
- In 2025 the FDA found the source in 4 of the 11 outbreak investigations it closed, 36 percent, down from 77 percent in 2024.
- FDA inspections of foreign food facilities are down about 30 percent, and the FoodNet surveillance program now tracks two pathogens instead of eight.
- Of 28 outbreaks announced in 2025, 17 never produced a brand-level recall.
The issue
It is not your imagination. Between June and September the United States saw the largest Cyclospora outbreak on record, a jalapeño Salmonella outbreak across 32 states, a recall of 1.59 million dozen eggs, a three-year Listeria outbreak finally closed, and hundreds of smaller recalls that never made the news: a Walmart Marketside tomato bisque soup kit pulled from 29 states over Listeria (3,240 packs, no illnesses), Outshine fruit bars with glass fragments, a Lidl spice mix with Salmonella, and Bettergoods pistachio butter in 19 states.
How big it got
The safety net is thinner. Reporting through 2026 documents thousands of FDA staff departures, foreign food facility inspections down about 30 percent, and a FoodNet surveillance program that once tracked eight pathogens and now tracks two, with Cyclospora no longer among them. In 2024 the FDA identified the source in 20 of the 26 outbreaks it investigated, 77 percent. In 2025 it closed 11 investigations and found the source in 4, 36 percent. PIRG counted 28 outbreaks announced in 2025 and no brand-level recall for 17 of them, with some recalls issued years after the first illness: about two years for ByHeart infant formula, more than six for Lyons Magnus frozen shakes.
What it means for you
More of the burden lands on you. Fewer inspections upstream, slower source identification, and recalls that name lot codes on packaging you threw away. For the full-year picture, see our 2025 food recall statistics.
How EatSure closes the gap
EatSure is the layer that was missing on the consumer side. Scan receipts and products, keep them on watch, get a push alert when a match posts, and read a plain-language explanation of what was recalled and how to check your package. The home screen shows your recall alerts, and an "All clear" when your tracked items are fine, so you are not relying on whichever recall a news site chose to cover.
